Environmental Communication and Refugee and Immigrant Communities: The Lowell Experience
Linda Silka, University of Massachusetts Lowell

This article reports on the firsthand work carried out by an environmental partnership in Lowell, Massachusetts, that brings together Southeast Asian refugees, university environmental researchers, and health care providers to address the urban environmental issues that confront newcomers moving to environmentally contaminated areas. Lessons learned from five years of experience are described. By closely examining these concrete initiatives we begin to get a sense of the promise and challenges that lie ahead in environmental communication within diverse communities.
